Our Very Own WLD’s Kara Sanford - German National Women's Lacrosse Team Head Coach

International Lacrosse

I sat down with Kara to gain some insight into her coaching style and find out her goals as the new German National Team Head Coach.

Here’s what she had to say…

What motivated you to take on the role of coaching the German women’s lacrosse national team?

One of my primary motivations for taking this role is the German player's passion for lacrosse. Having coached many of them in their regular seasons, I knew this passion bled through to the national squad. I also see it as a personal challenge. I'm motivated to see how far I can take this team.

What previous experience do you have coaching internationally?

I began my international journey in 2014, and from that point on, I've had the privilege of coaching in both Germany and the Netherlands. My coaching experience extended to leading the Dutch National Team for several years, ending in our participation in the 2017 World Cup.

What are your long-term goals and vision for the German Women’s Lacrosse National Team, and how do you plan to develop the program over the coming years?

My ultimate objective is to secure an Olympic bid. In the short term, my focus is on creating a foundation for local coaches in Germany, enabling them to acquire the necessary skills and establish themselves in the field. I believe that the growth of the sport and our athletes in Germany is closely intertwined with the development of our coaches. It is crucial that upon concluding their National Camp experience, the women rejoin their club teams led by a skilled coach.

How do you plan to build team cohesion and foster a positive team culture within the German national team?

Team culture is a fragile thing. To build team cohesion and cultivate a positive team culture within the German national team, I intend to emphasize open communication and mutual respect. Regular team-building activities and trust-building exercises will be integrated into our training regimen to strengthen the bonds among team members. Encouraging a sense of unity and shared purpose will be a priority, and we'll work on setting clear team goals that everyone can rally around. Additionally, I will ensure that feedback is a two-way process, allowing players to voice their opinions and contribute to the team's growth and development.

What strategies do you have in mind for developing the skills and tactics of the players to make them more competitive on the international stage?

Feedback & implementation….and repeat! Keep it simple!

What do you think your biggest challenge will be this season?

Our biggest challenge is learning this new format. With every scrimmage, drill, and tournament, we take huge leaps forward. We just need to continue getting experience and take a little pressure off as we learn! It's hard to acknowledge and accept that sentiment, but it's a journey.

If you could have any lacrosse player or coach, past or present join the team for a day of practice and bonding, who would it be and why?

Kelly Amonte-Hiller. My first stick was an Amonte and I'd idolized her from a young age! It would be cool to close that circle.
